Frank Dempsey belonged to a group of artists during the 1960s, who worked together in Wales trying to produce new answers to the problems of landscape painting. His approach was to offer very accurate painting of details with an impressionistic overall effect, produced by a geometric or striped design for the mass of the picture. This technique dictated the mood of his paintings, adding further dimension to the flat surface.
Dempsey was a highly eccentric, temperamental individual, who worked spasmodically, producing prolific batches of paintings with long intervals of meditation in-between.
Most of his work was carried out in Wales and Hampshire but he also spent time in Spain and the other Mediterranean countries where the brilliant lighting attracted his eye and challenged his ability, as it has many other artists.
